In Using EMDR with
Children & Teenagers

My Story

Counselling is something I have always wanted to do! There has always been a desire, a drive to become a therapist. I have always loved learning new things especially in the classroom and as such, I have received two masters degrees, one in Religion and my second is a MA degree in Counselling Psychology. I have loved this work and the people that I have journeyed with throughout my career. I have had the privilege of working with individuals who have left a relationship due to domestic violence. High-risk teenagers have taught me so much about life from their perspective.

And now, I have the opportunity of journeying with children, teenagers and adults. I have worked with children in the foster care system, counselling children and teenagers in private schools as well as individuals within my community who are struggling with depression, anxiety and other life experiences.

One of the strengths I see in each of my clients is courage! It takes courage to come into a therapist’s office and talk about their life and in particular talking about things that are not going well for them. I desire to honour that courage in each session with my clients. I recognize that talking about one’s life can be difficult for some and as such I have taken training in sand-tray, expressive arts and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) as these are ways “to convey what may be difficult to express with words, a way to 'tell without talking.' ” (Malchiodi, 2020). I look forward to journeying with you!

Expressive Art Therapy

Expressive Arts.jpg

"Expressive arts therapy uses various arts—movement, drawing, painting, sculpting, music, writing, sound, and improvisation—in a supportive setting to facilitate growth and healing. It is a process of discovering ourselves through any art form that comes from an emotional depth. It is not creating a 'pretty' picture. It is not a dance-ready for the stage. It is not a poem written and rewritten to perfection." ~ Natalie Rogers

EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an integrative psychotherapy approach and proven effective for the treatment of trauma and many other mental health problems.

EMDR does not rely on talk therapy or medications. Instead, EMDR uses a patient's own rapid, rhythmic eye movements. These eye movements dampen the power of emotionally charged memories of past traumatic events. (https://emdrcanada.org/)

Sand-Tray Therapy

Sand-Tray.jpg

Sand-tray is a full sensory experience! We have our conscious and unconscious mind that are often in conflict. Sand-tray therapy can integrate these two minds and help find resolutions to these internal conflicts. Sand-tray is an appropriate modality for children, teenagers and adults to express what is troubling them. By just touching the sand, raking or pouring the sand through a funnel, your nervous system is quieted and the body relaxes which then enables you to process your life experiences whether it be a traumatic event or a fight on the playground or a fight with your spouse.
